People are finding gold all the time in Alaska and Africa and other places throughout the world, but would it surprise you to know that you can find gold right in the streets of your own city? It could be paved with gold!

Raffi Stepanian has been making his living scanning the ground around New York City’s diamond district for shiny flecks of gold or precious stones like rubies and diamonds.  His hard work has brought him as much as $300/day in earnings, and much of his work simply consists of pacing the sidewalks back and forth until something bright and shiny catches his eye.

His trained eye isn’t the only thing he relies on. He collects the dirt, muck and whatever else lies in cracks and crevices and takes it home for mining. He sifts through it by using tweezers and a gold pan. He uses tweezers to break up the clumps of dirt and pick out anything promising that stands out. Then he puts the rest in his gold pan and shakes it around to allow the flecks of gold to sink down to the bottom of the pan. A tedious job for sure, but not for Raffi.

Street mining might sound like a fools tale, but did you stop to think where Raffi spends most of his time? The diamond district is home to over 2,000 independent jewelry dealers. This is where industry workers come out of the their shops every day after working with gold and precious metals and little remnants collect on their clothes. These little pieces of precious stones and metals then drop down and fall into little nooks and crannies all over 47th street between Fifth and Sixth Avenue where Raffi does most of his work.

If the sidewalks are littered in gold dust and precious stones, just imagine how much gold and  been washed down into sewers! Now that would take a special kind of person to go trudging down in there in search for gold. But when you have gold fever like Raffi, finding those precious metals and stones makes it all worth it in the end!

It’s more simple than you think. Practically anyone could do it with a trained eye and a little work ethic. But what sets Raffi apart from the rest is his zeal and optimism. He loves finding gold. It’s his passion. And he explains his work in full detail in the video below!

There is a ton of gold yet to be discovered, and it can be in the last place you’d suspect – right beneath your feet. All you need is a hand broom, a dust pan, a knife, a set of tweezers, a gold pan and the right attitude and you can find gold in all kinds of places.

Though Toronto doesn’t have a diamond district anywhere near the size of New York’s, there is a jewelry exchange located on Yonge Street across from the Eaton Centre. You really never know what sort of stuff is hidden down in the nooks and crannies of Toronto’s streets until you get out and start prospecting!
