Throughout history, gold has been one of the most precious resources known to man. It was no different then than it is now. The gift of gold is a supreme gift, and there’s no better time to give the gift of gold than special occasions like Christmas and New Years.
Gold’s significance is pure obvious. It’s the currency that doesn’t disappear. It shines in all countries, cultures and no matter what language you speak, it’s valuable. It’s beautiful to look at, it’s pure, it’s rare, and its historical context is rich.
Also, when an economy is doing well, the price of gold will rise. Hence, giving the gift of gold is like giving someone an investment that is sure to serve them well in the future. If they are ever in need, gold can be pawned, sold or traded for other goods. This will never change. Even in an economy that’s so bad that you must trade your gold for food, gold is a commodity that has life-saving potential.
Why Give Gold?
Giving gold is different from giving an electronic device, a piece of clothing, or a gift card to someone’s favorite restaurant. Gold withstands the test of time. Looking back in history, gold has always been valuable, hence, it always will be valuable.
Even in its most basic form, a ring, a pendant, a watch or anything gold-plated, these things mean something special to the person receiving the gift. The gift of gold carries a sense of appreciation with it that is unmatched by the vast majority of other gifts. Receiving the gift of gold gives you an extraordinary feeling of acceptance, love and adoration.
In light of historical events and this time of year, there’s the biblical tale of the wise men who brought precious gifts to a baby laying in a manger, wrapped in swaddling clothes. These wise men came from afar and brought three gifts; gold, frankincense and myrrh. Without going into too much detail, it suffices to say that these wise men traveled a great distance to bring gifts that were fit for a king. Gold was the first mentioned of these precious gifts, and that says something special about giving the gift of gold.
Frankincense is not as well known a gift to us in the Western culture as it is in some Eastern cultures. Even today, frankincense is used by Jews, Christians and Muslims for religious purposes and makes a nice gift (at least in the East).
Myrrh is similar to frankincense but the aroma isn’t sweet. It’s not as nice a gift as frankincense, but still has value nonetheless. Gold was indeed the most precious of the three gifts that were brought to Jesus.
