Here at Toronto Gold, we employ several different methods to test the gold and silver that our customers bring to us. One of these methods is to use a device that measures specific gravity. When a customer asks how it works, we explain, it’s really quite simple and the machine is quite easy to use. First, you place your item on top of the machine to obtain its weight. Next, you immerse the item inside the water bath and you get another weight. The difference between the two weights is used to calculate the specific gravity of the item which the machine gives to use in a numerical readout.
The most common uses for the specific gravity machine here at Toronto Gold is for testing gold and silver bullion, however, it can also be used on jewelry. Jewelry that is hollow or that may trap air bubbles will not give an accurate weight so this method of testing is not the best way to achieve an accurate result. Pure gold (24K) has a specific density of 19.3 while 10K gold has a density of 11.4. Pure Silver has a specific gravity of 10.5 while sterling silver’s is 10.1.
We are always happy to test something for you so stop by and say hello at 829 Bloor Street West.
